Labyrinths, 2021 (Lakkos Artist Residency, Crete, Greece)

A group of textile works inspired by Jennifer Saint’s Ariadne and Charlotte Higgins’ Red Thread. A journey of exploration, healing, and recovering humanity through the exuberance of decoration.

“We are always in the middle of the labyrinth. We are in the story, but we cannot tell the end or see the shape of the labyrinth.”

Works:

“Ariadne’s Dance” (cotton, raffia, metallic thread, vintage textiles, 30x30 cm): Inspired by the Knossian dance, where “weaving steps meant the paths of the labyrinth.” The vintage Cretan textile becomes the tile floor designed by Daedalus in the palace of Knossos, as Ariadne comes alive in a dizzying dance of red Cretan stitch embroidery.

“The Granddaughters of Helios” (cotton, metallic thread, raffia, vintage textiles, palm tree seed pods, 50x40 cm): The story of Ariadne and her young sister Phaedra, both the granddaughters of Helios, the sun god. Two women whose journeys became inseparable from the labyrinth of Knossos and the story of Theseus, this piece is a metaphor for how the things that bind us together can be the same things that keep us apart. A meditation on the interplay between chance and choice.

“Dead Ends” (cotton, linen, wood pulp, raffia, vintage textiles, recycled ceramic fragments, 95x95 cm): One of the most interesting things about labyrinths is the contrast between a deliberate, orderly design that creates an experience of chaos and bewilderment. In a labyrinth, one must enjoy traveling by a circuitous path, abandoning rational impulses.

“But even the dead ends are there to be savored, and they are a part of the beauty and intricacy of the design.”
